The situation is further exacerbated by regional specifics: varying rates of labeling implementation across CIS countries, active parallel imports between neighboring markets, and a massive volume of sales through marketplaces and social networks, where moderation cannot keep pace with the turnover.
What is meant by "piracy" in pharma and dietary supplements and why it is dangerous
This term usually encompasses several phenomena:
• direct counterfeit – illegal imitation of the packaging, trademark, and composition of a well-known product;
• falsified product – a product passed off as the original but with an altered or incomplete composition, such as one lacking the declared active ingredient;
• parallel import (gray market) – legally manufactured goods imported bypassing the official distributor, often without adhering to storage conditions or the localization requirements of a specific CIS country;
• digital piracy of formulations and marketing – copying a competitor's packaging, name, and design without altering the composition itself, which damages reputation more than health.
Ultimately, all these forms undermine the same thing: consumer trust in the brand.
Many dietary supplements do not require complex clinical registration like medicines do, which simplifies market entry for unscrupulous manufacturers. People buy health products (for weight loss, immunity boosting, etc.) "emotionally," rarely checking their origin, while marketplaces and social networks easily become sales channels where counterfeits are disguised as "originals from a private seller."
The situation is further complicated by differences in legislation and control systems among CIS countries: what is strictly prohibited in one country may be sold freely in a neighboring one and then "flow" across the border. The high margin between the cost of a capsule and the price of branded packaging makes counterfeiting economically very profitable, while modern printing allows for the copying of packaging, holograms, and QR codes that are almost indistinguishable from the original to the naked eye.
For consumers, the main risk is receiving a product with the wrong dosage, foreign impurities, or no declared active ingredient at all; in the case of pharmaceuticals, this can cost health and life.
For businesses, counterfeit goods mean direct financial losses, brand dilution, legal costs, and, most importantly, a blow to trust: a single instance of a "bad batch" can wipe out years of work on market reputation.
How counterfeits are usually identified
As a rule, in Russia, counterfeit goods are identified using the "Chestny Znak" system with Data Matrix codes, which allows tracking a product's path from the manufacturer to the point of sale. However, CIS countries have their own labeling systems that are not always synchronized with the Russian one, which in itself creates loopholes for gray imports.

It must be taken into account that manual verification of every batch and every seller is physically impossible given the scale of modern online sales, especially when dealing with several countries in the region across different platforms and languages.
